The seriousness of the crime can have a large impact on the chances of obtaining an order terminating proceedings on the ground that the conviction does not trigger a ground of deportation. Offenses involving sex with minors are notorious examples of the axiom, “hard cases make bad law.” By contrast, it is far easier to win a ruling that a more minor offense does not trigger deportation.
