In federal court, there is only one vehicle by which counsel may attack the legal validity of a state-court conviction: a petition for habeas corpus filed under 28 U.S.C. § 2254.  See § 3.27, infra.  A federal petition for a writ of coram nobis may not be used to attack a state conviction.  See § 3.26, infra.  Because there are some analogies between the time limits affecting motions attacking federal convictions, and those attacking state convictions, the general rules governing attacks on federal convictions are given here in § 3.20, infra.
