The immigration courts often require certified copies of documents from the criminal courts in order to prove the nature of a criminal court conviction.  Therefore, counsel arranging a safe haven plea should obtain certified copies of all relevant documents for submission to the immigration court when they wish to establish that the safe haven is a safe haven.

Moreover, copies should be given to the client, ideally with an opinion letter showing why the disposition does not trigger deportation or other adverse immigration consequences, such as inadmissibility, if the client wishes to travel outside of the United States.
